My Haunted Homecoming

So I visited my hometown in Kentucky this past week to see my parents. I had visited before knowing that the house had otherworldly inhabitants but this time, the activity was more than prevalent. In the little quaint riverside town of Cloverport is where I am from and where my mother and my stepfather live. Let me take you day-by-day of what I had experienced during my visit. Sit back and relax as this will be one of my longest posts…

The night I arrived, in the room that I was sleeping in, I was not alone. I woke up around 4:30 in the morning and had laid there, finding it hard to sleep. Not long after, I heard a male whimper or that’s the best I could describe it, as if there was a man in pain and I know for a fact that it was not my stepfather.

The next day, while my mother and I were hanging out on the landing as soon as you walk up the stairs – and you could see the entire stairway, for there was a railing beside the landing – one of their pups started barking while at the bottom of the stairs. It was pretty odd because he stared at them as if there was something on it and he even whined and acted like something touched him.. the same day (Monday) we pulled out the Ghost Radar app (I know, I know, a lot of you are gonna give a crap about what I have to say about this app, but just do your research, because others have had incredible experiences with this app) and for awhile we didn’t receive a single word but when we did, we were surprised at how they connected…It began saying words like ‘river,’ ‘their property,’ then it said, ‘I’m forgotten,’ then, ‘general,’ ‘sail,’ and ‘William,’ and ‘Ohio.’ Of course, there were words that likely didn’t mean anything…But the home I stayed in was directly in front of the Ohio river. Maybe its all just coincidence but I’m not the only one that have had odd experiences with the app…

The following night (aside from the constant eerie feeling I felt), I went downstairs to get my mother some ice and to get myself a drink. When I was retrieving the ice, I felt footsteps come close behind me a few times when I was down there as if something kept walking up on me, it was pretty freaky if I do say so myself. The rest of my trip, I did hear the typical footsteps and heard a breath in the room next to the bathroom.

Now, near the town of Cloverport resides the Joseph Holt House, a historic landmark that dates back to the 1800’s. We took another trip (I have been there a couple times before) to the Holt house but before getting to the good stuff, let me give you guys a little backstory on the home and the legends that are apart of it.

The Holt House is a three story home that was named after a prominent figure of Kentucky named Joseph Holt, who was born in Breckinridge County. He was an important member of the Buchanan administration and was the Judge Advocate General for the US Army as well as the prosecutor for the Lincoln Assassination trials. He retired in 1875 and died in the state of Washington. Today, he is buried in the Holt family cemetery located near the home.

The current home, though it has been there since before my grandmother was a child (she played there as a kid), there was one that stood before it but it burned down. Apparently a baby died in that fire and somebody (supposedly Joseph Holt’s father) died after falling down the stairs.

My experience at the Holt House

I do have an interesting photo to share with you guys… As I walked around and snapped some photos, I didn’t realize that I was getting attention as well…

If you look in the image above, from afar, there’s nothing to see. But if you zoom in, you can clearly spot two facial apparitions staring back at me… I’ve shown a few of my friends and they see it as well but what do you guys think? Am I seeing things?

Aside from the creepy image, the environment gave off an ominous feeling, as if you are indeed being watched and followed around the property. There’s a patch of grass surrounded by round fencing where the mower always shuts off every single time and that spot just cannot be mowed..Maybe nothing paranormal but I have heard that when the baby died at the previous house, it was above that exact spot..Not saying that it’s fact but quite the coincidence.

Alright, that will do it for this post! Hope you guys enjoyed it and please let me know what you think!

  1. How odd we came past this story. My husband I live in Tell City. We were driving around this evening near Cloverport and drove past the Holt House. We were trying to find our way back home from Irvington after stopping in Hardinsburg and getting a little turned around lol. We’ve never heard of the house, but me being a homeschooling mama had to check it out. I wondered if maybe it would be a nice field trip/lesson for our kiddos. My husband got out to look at the sign out front, but I was spooked. I don’t believe in the paranormal, or at least I didn’t til tonight. I didn’t want to sit in the car as I felt someone was watching me. So I joined my husband out front and I kept telling my husband how the property gave me the creeps and I was ready to go. So within a few minutes, we got back in our car and drove off. We were chatting about how neat it would be to bring the kiddos there when it got a little warmer when lights started flashing in our backseat.
Our 16 year old recently got a skateboard from my mother for Christmas and it came with these little lights, similar to tea lights, that blink, i assume for safety when riding in the dark. They’ve sat in the door ever since we returned home and no one has really messed with them. ALL 4 WERE BLINKING. It’s safe to say all of them are now sitting on the side of the road about 1 mile from the Holt House. I was so flustered I tossed them out the window.
My husband, who is a believer in the paranormal, suggested I look up any hauntings reported at that house and I came across your blog. So for what it’s worth, I believe you.

    1. Oh my goodness, thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience! It’s very crazy and unexpected that someone around the area came across this, so this brightened my morning for sure! I’m very intrigued by your story as the Holt House is genuinely creepy and every time I’ve visited, I too always feel like I’m being watched, especially when I visit at night! Thank you for not only believing my story but for sharing yours, Kat!
